Originally a Chinese folk medicine, TuiNa is one of the first documented massage techniques in the world, referenced in the seminal work of Chinese healing philosophy, The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, more than 2500 years ago. Throughout several millennia, TuiNa has co-evolved with other Asian techniques and Chinese medical philosophy itself. From the start, it was influenced by acupressure, its counterpart in Chinese medicine. Many of its current techniques involve specific energy points and meridians, and the manipulations necessary to their efficacious treatment. In the sixth century B.C., a Japanese technique called An Mo came to China by way of the Korean peninsula and was incorporated into TuiNa. Many texts in China and the United States still refer to TuiNa as An Mo. Oriental Healing Arts Institute (OHAI) [the school] specializes in TuiNa. TuiNa, Chinese Medical Massage has a long history of clinical studies showing efficacy in treating chronic and acute medical problems. TuiNa uses finger pressure to activate the various points. TuiNa is effective in relieving pain and stress, stimulating the immune system and/or balancing organ systems for healing. TuiNa is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is based on a sophisticated understanding of the flow of vital energy called Qi, through channels (meridians) in the body. This energy is channeled and stimulated through the application of acupressure, moxibustion, cupping therapy, and the use of traditional herbs. TCM effectively treats common diseases and conditions in adults and children with safe, non-invasive techniques. Students will be completely prepared to have their own massage practice or work in a wellness clinic, Dr.’s office, health club or spa. Students will be fully prepared to take the National Certification exam and the NCCAOM Certification. Today, in China, specialized degrees in TuiNa are awarded to doctorate students of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Such a degree can take ten years to complete. These TuiNa doctors work in TCM hospitals with others who specialize in acupuncture and herbs to provide a unique form of holistic health care. Although gaining popularity and esteem, TuiNa still remains largely undiscovered
and unutilized in the West. Those who are familiar with its techniques and
benefits will find themselves better able to provide massage therapy to a
variety of clients for a variety of therapeutic reasons. Students of Tui Na and
other Asian therapies are able to combine what they know about Western science
and massage to synthesize a new understanding of massage therapy. Trends
show that the demand for TuiNa and other Asian therapies is continuing to
increase rapidly in America. Click here for registration information in our Colorado massage therapy program!
